The Forestry Commission (FC) has strongly condemned the murder of Mr. Raphael Ganyo, one of its officers who was a resource guard in the Wildlife Division stationed at the Kalakpa Resource Reserve in the Volta Region. While on patrol near Zitoe Camp inside the reserve in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, Mr. Ganyo was shot and killed.
The Commission stated that around 6:00 a.m., a patrol team responding to a possible poaching incident discovered an armed man hidden in dense vegetation near the reserve’s boundary. The suspected poacher shot Mr Ganyo in the chest during the encounter, killing him instantly.
The Ghana Police Service was immediately notified. The body of the deceased was taken to the Ho Regional Hospital mortuary for an autopsy after crime scene investigations were completed. The Commission says it is working closely with law enforcement to find and arrest the suspect.
Originally from Mafi Kumasi in the Volta Region, Mr Raphael Ganyo was born on March 15, 1997. He joined the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission as a Resource Guard on November 1, 2021, and served in the Law Enforcement Unit until his tragic death.
The Forestry Commission has extended its deepest condolences to Mr Ganyo’s family, colleagues, and loved ones, honouring him as a dedicated officer who lost his life in the line of duty defending Ghana’s natural heritage. The committee has committed to continuing the investigation until it reaches its conclusion.
The Ghana Police Service was notified of the event right away. The body of the deceased was transported to the mortuary of the Ho Regional Hospital for autopsy following the completion of the crime scene investigations. The Commission claims to be cooperating closely with law enforcement in order to locate and apprehend the offender.
