According to US President Donald Trump, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was apprehended following a massive US attack on the capital city of Caracas. Trump stated that Maduro is on the USS Iwo Jima, which is heading for New York, where he will face narcotics and weapons charges in Manhattan federal court. See CNN’s live coverage of the strikes.
President Trump stated that the country’s future governance is still being decided. According to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia must be installed, but Venezuela’s foreign minister maintains that Maduro is the country’s legitimate leader.
According to CNN sources, Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were pulled from their bedroom by elite US troops during the raid. According to Trump, some Americans were wounded when a helicopter crashed during the carefully planned operation.
CNN crews witnessed explosions in Caracas, and reported that certain portions of the city were without power. People have been observed queuing up outside pharmacies and grocery shops. Meanwhile, some Venezuelans overseas have celebrated the strongman’s departure.
