Resources Should Go Into Rail Development, Not New Expressway – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

Former Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has urged the government to reconsider its plans for a proposed new expressway, calling instead for greater investment in rail development and the completion of the Accra–Kumasi Highway.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen program, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said the condition of many existing roads across the country remains poor and requires urgent rehabilitation rather than the construction of new highways.

He warned that building an expressway through virgin lands could have serious implications for food production while also exposing the state to significant compensation claims that could ultimately result in judgment debts.

According to the former Majority Leader, channeling resources into rail infrastructure would provide a more sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective solution to Ghana’s long-term transportation and development needs.

“Our roads are deteriorating, and we can secure funding for contractors to fix them. We need to carefully consider the impact of the expressway on surrounding virgin areas, including its effects on food production and productivity,” he stated.

He further emphasised the financial risks involved in land acquisition for the proposed expressway.

“Additionally, we must determine how much compensation will be paid. There is also the risk of judgment debt. In my view, our priority should be the development of our rail network,” he added.
