Prez. Mahama revokes Baba Jamal’s High Commission appointment over vote-buying allegations.

Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, was promptly ordered to return home by President John Dramani Mahama.

This comes after charges of voter manipulation during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency, which he won.

The directive, which was released by the Presidency Communications Unit on February 7, 2026, as a statement, is a response to accusations that delegates were induced during the party’s internal elections, in which Mr. Baba Jamal ran for office.

The Presidency claimed that Mr. Baba Jamal was the only public official among the primary candidates, which set him apart, despite charges of vote-buying being made against numerous candidates.

“The President observed that Baba Jamal was the only incumbent public officer among the several candidates who ran in the primaries against whom vote-buying allegations were made,” the statement stated.

The NDC’s General Secretary also issued a public statement that the party has started its own internal inquiry into the primary-related charges, which President Mahama acknowledged.

Mr. Jamal Mohammed Ahmed had previously defended the distribution of televisions to delegates, claiming that it was not meant to sway vote choices.

In exchange for their participation in the parliamentary primary in the Ayawaso East Constituency, the campaign staff of candidate Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed gave 32-inch televisions to delegates.

The Jubilee House statement emphasized that the recall is based on the standards of behavior expected of public officials and the necessity to safeguard the integrity of public office, not on any attempt to influence ongoing internal party processes.

The Presidency said that, “strictly in view of the standards of conduct expected of public officers, the President considers it necessary to act decisively to preserve the integrity of public office and to avoid any perception of impropriety or conflict with the Government’s Code of Conduct for Political Appointees.

The recall goes into effect right away.  To carry out the decision, the Minister of Foreign Affairs has been instructed to begin the required diplomatic and administrative measures.
