The campaign team of Bryan Acheampong, a presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), says it is undeterred by the endorsement of former Vice President and fellow contender Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by 118 former NPP parliamentary candidates.
Speaking in an interview with Citi News, Mpraeso MP and campaign team member Davies Opoku Ansah maintained that the endorsement would not slow their campaign. He said the team remains focused on engaging delegates ahead of the party’s presidential primary scheduled for January 31 and is confident of securing victory.
According to Opoku Ansah, many of the individuals who endorsed Dr. Bawumia are already affiliated with his campaign, making the move unsurprising. He argued that meaningful grassroots engagement, rather than last-minute public declarations, is what truly influences delegates.
He added that Acheampong’s campaign has been actively engaging party structures nationwide, noting that the aspirant is expected to have visited all 276 constituencies by the weekend. The team, he said, will then intensify its final outreach efforts, expressing strong confidence in winning the contest.
On Thursday, January 8, 118 NPP parliamentary candidates from the 2024 general election publicly threw their support behind Dr. Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primaries, describing him as the most prepared and electable candidate in the race.
At a press briefing, the group said their decision was based on Dr. Bawumia’s experience, competence, vision, and leadership credentials, asserting that none of the other flagbearer aspirants matched his profile.
Addressing the media, the group’s leader and former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, said the endorsement followed a careful evaluation of all candidates seeking the party’s presidential nomination.
