The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Western Region has cautioned customers whose buildings and movable structures are affected by ongoing road expansion works in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis against transferring electricity meters without the company’s approval.
The Regional General Manager of ECG, Engineer Emmanuel Ofori, said some structures with ECG-installed meters would be impacted by the road expansion project but warned that meters must not be relocated without notifying the company.
He explained that ECG meters are registered with unique geographical codes and Service Point Numbers (SPNs), which are used to identify their exact locations for billing and monitoring purposes.
According to him, unauthorised transfer of meters makes it difficult to trace them and could disrupt accurate billing.
“Meters transferred without recourse to the company may be deemed stolen, and such matters could be referred to law enforcement agencies for appropriate action,” Engineer Ofori cautioned.
The Regional Commercial Manager, Mr Emmanuel Sam, said movable structures with ECG meters may be allowed to relocate with their meters only after investigation, certification, and approval by ECG.
On the road expansion project, Mr Sam revealed that ECG has established a special team to remove meters from affected structures and keep them safely during the demolition and construction period.
He assured customers that the meters would be securely stored by ECG and reinstalled at their new locations once they were ready.
Mr Sam also urged customers who had already removed their meters on their own to return them immediately to the nearest ECG office.
He added that ECG is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure a smooth and coordinated evacuation process.
