Bawumia urges unity after winning NPP flagbearer race.

Ghana’s former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has called for unity within the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) after winning its presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Speaking after being officially declared the party’s flagbearer, Dr Bawumia urged supporters to put aside divisions from the contest and work together towards a common goal.

“The outcome of this primary should mark the beginning of renewed cooperation,” he said, appealing to party members nationwide to rally behind what he described as a shared vision.

Dr Bawumia won the contest with 110,643 votes, representing 56.48% of ballots cast.

Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong came second with 46,554 votes (23.76%), followed by former Agriculture Minister Dr Bryan Acheampong with 36,303 votes (18.53%).

Former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum secured 1,999 votes (1.02%), while former party General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong received 402 votes (0.21%).

More than 190,000 delegates took part in the vote at 333 polling centres across the country.

Party officials said the process was conducted under tight security and was largely peaceful, as Dr Bawumia pledged to lead an inclusive campaign ahead of the 2028 elections.
