AKSA Ahwomaso adds 140MW to national power grid.

The integration of the AKSA Ahwomaso Power Plant into Ghana’s national electricity transmission grid has been completed, marking a key step in efforts to expand power generation capacity and strengthen the reliability of the country’s electricity supply.

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, inspected the facility after the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) finalised the grid tie-in, allowing the plant to begin supplying power to the national network.

When fully operational, the power station is expected to add about 141 megawatts (MW) to Ghana’s electricity system. Officials say the additional capacity will help meet growing demand from households, businesses, and industry, particularly in the middle belt and surrounding regions.

The new supply is also expected to ease pressure on the grid during peak demand periods and reduce the risk of power shortages.

Speaking during the inspection, Dr Jinapor described the project as an important milestone in the government’s energy strategy, which aims to balance expansion of generation capacity with long-term system stability.

“The completion of the tie-in at the AKSA Ahwomaso Power Plant is a significant step in our efforts to expand generation capacity and improve the reliability of electricity supply for Ghanaians,” he said. “It reflects our commitment to long-term system stability and sustainable energy delivery.”

Energy officials say incremental additions such as the Ahwomaso plant are essential for stabilising voltage levels, reducing supply shortfalls and supporting productivity in the private sector, as electricity demand rises alongside economic recovery and industrial growth.

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition said the project forms part of a broader, coordinated approach to strengthening Ghana’s power infrastructure, with a focus on reliability, efficiency and value for money.
