Accra New Town building collapse leaves 2 dead with many more feared injured.

The collapse of a three-storey structure at Accra New Town has been confirmed to have claimed two lives. This occurs as rescue crews step up their efforts throughout the night to reach individuals who are still buried under the rubble.

Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the mayor of Accra, verified the deaths and indicated that 14 individuals have so far been saved from the debris.

Earlier today, the incident took place at an unfinished three-storey building on the grounds of the Accra New Town Experimental Basic School, which is also used by Christians for Sunday services. The reason behind the collapse is still unknown.

To maintain operations after night, emergency response teams, such as those from the Fire Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the Ghana Police Service, have set up floodlights and gear. The ongoing rescue operation is made all the more urgent by reports that numerous individuals are still likely trapped, with some victims calling for aid from beneath the rubble.

The first rescue efforts were made by locals and bystanders, who used their bare hands and simple equipment to drag victims from the debris before the emergency personnel arrived. Rescue teams are racing against time to save lives, and they claim operations will continue throughout the night.
