The chiefs of Wenchi have called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to prioritize the development of their town, citing the lack of basic infrastructure and urgent needs in the area.

Nana Damoah Koasane Adusi Poku Kafabaae IV, Akyeamehene of the Wenchi Traditional Area, said during a visit by NDC National Chairman Johnson Aseidu Nketia that Wenchi, once a vibrant town, now suffers from poor roads and limited development.

“Everything, including our roads, is in terrible condition, requiring urgent attention,” he said. He added that the Municipal Assembly alone cannot address these issues adequately, and appealed to the national leadership for support.

He described Mr. Nketia as a “native” who understands the people’s plight and can help attract governmental assistance. The chief also called for employment opportunities for the youth, emphasizing the presence of hardworking and competent NDC members in Wenchi who could serve diligently if given a chance.

Nana Opoku Asuma IV, Nkonsiahene, expressed gratitude to the Wenchi MP, Seidu Haruna, and the Municipal Chief Executive, Gloria Gyamfi, for renovations at Nkonsia Presbyterian Basic School, which had been damaged during heavy rains, affecting over 700 students. The school also received books, computers, and other teaching materials.

Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, aka General Mosquito, is the National Chairman of the ruling NDC government.

Mr. Nketia praised the people of Wenchi and the Bono Region for their decisive support of President John Mahama and local NDC candidates in the 2024 elections, particularly in a former NPP stronghold. He assured residents that the party is pushing the Wenchi development agenda seriously to maintain their confidence and electoral support.

On the issue of poor roads connecting Wenchi to other districts, Mr. Nketia said contracts under the Big Push initiative have been awarded for major roads, including the Wa-Hamile route, with five contractors working to ensure speedy completion. He emphasized the need to fix both town and regional connecting roads to improve accessibility and enhance the image of the municipality.

The NDC Chairman also confirmed that the Wenchi water project, initiated by the previous administration, remains a priority for completion under President Mahama.

“So we are not taking your vote for granted,” he said, warning that opposition parties will find it difficult to regain the Wenchi seat.

MP Alhaji Seidu Haruna expressed confidence in the government’s ability to deliver on development promises, noting ongoing projects in education, health, sanitation, and employment, with a focus on construction and timely completion rather than ceremonial activities.

Mr. Nketia’s two-day thank-you tour of the Bono Region will cover 11 communities, including Nkonsia (Wenchi), Namasa (Tain), Bonakire (Jaman North), Miremano (Jaman South), Koraso (Berekum West), Krakrom (Dormaa West), Yawkrom (Dormaa Central), Wamanafo (Dormaa East), Biadan (Berekum East), Nsoatre (Sunyani West), and Yawhimakrom (Sunyani East).

He was accompanied by top NDC officials, including Bono Regional Chairman Amb. Kwadwo Nyamekye Marfo, Regional Minister Joseph Addae Akwaboa, and MPs Sulemana Adama and Frederick Ahenkwaa Yaw, among others.
