Obuasi: Two jailed for 15 and 25 years over Kyekyewere gold robbery

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has confirmed that two men have been convicted and sentenced in connection with a widely reported robbery case after detailed investigations and a full trial at the Bekwai Circuit Court.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Police said the convicts—Francis Oppong, also known as Kwame Abuu, and Francis Nyamekye, also called Amearo—were found guilty for their involvement in a violent robbery committed in December 2023.

The two were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, aiding and abetting robbery, and robbery, contrary to Sections 23(1), 20(1), and 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). They were first arraigned before the Bekwai Circuit Court on January 30, 2024, following prolonged police investigations.

After the conclusion of the trial, the court on January 5, 2026, convicted both men. Oppong was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment with hard labour, while Nyamekye received a 25-year jail term with hard labour. Both are to serve their sentences at the Kumasi Central Prison.

According to the police, the robbery occurred on December 16, 2023, at Kyekyewere near Obuasi and targeted a small-scale miner. Investigations established that the convicts, working with accomplices who remain at large, planned and executed the attack.

Oppong, who resides in Kyekyewere, was found to have tracked the victim’s movements and supplied vital information that enabled the gang to raid the victim’s home and mining site, during which the victim was assaulted and sustained injuries.

Items stolen during the robbery included a pump-action gun, a Huawei mobile phone valued at GH¢1,200, 18 pounds of gold estimated at GH¢100,000, and GH¢2,000 in cash.
