Hundreds of delegates of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) gathered in the Gushegu Constituency in the Northern Region on Sunday, 11 January, to receive former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as he continued his campaign ahead of the party’s internal presidential primaries.
Dr Bawumia, who was the NPP’s presidential candidate in the 2024 general election, is seeking the party’s endorsement once again to lead it into the 2028 polls. He is currently touring parts of the Northern Regions to engage grassroots members and rally support.
The Gushegu visit, hosted in a constituency represented in Parliament by former Deputy Transport Minister Alhassan Tampuli, formed part of efforts to consolidate backing at the local level. Party structures, including electoral area coordinators, polling station chairpersons speaking on behalf of executives, as well as both former and newly elected constituency executives, publicly declared their support for Dr Bawumia’s bid.
Addressing supporters, Mr Tampuli formally endorsed Dr Bawumia, describing him as a credible and capable leader suited to guiding the party forward. He said the support of NPP Members of Parliament in the area was grounded in merit rather than loyalty or sentiment.
“We are not supporting Dr Bawumia blindly,” he said. “We are supporting him on the basis of competence, vision and integrity.”
In his remarks, Dr Bawumia expressed gratitude for the reception and the endorsements and pledged to work towards uniting the party. He stressed that cohesion, credibility and a clear sense of purpose would be essential as the NPP positions itself for the 2028 general elections, urging members to remain focused on the party’s long-term success.
