Mahama Ayariga steps down from the NDC Ayawaso East investigation as Majority Caucus calls for primary cancellation

Given the strong stance taken by the Majority Caucus in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Head of Government Business in Parliament, has resigned from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) inquiry committee looking into possible vote-buying in the party’s Ayawaso East parliamentary primaries.

Following the caucus’s demand for the election to be called off, Mr. Ayariga said in a message through his social media on Sunday, February 8, that it had become “untenable” for him to remain on the committee. Mr Ayariga stated that it is now impossible for him to sit on the Investigation Committee established by the National Executive of the NDC due to the stand taken by the NDC Caucus in Parliament regarding the cancellation of the Ayawaso East primary.

“I have consequently informed the party that a suitable replacement should be chosen,” he said.

The NDC had previously established a three-member committee to look into claims of widespread vote-buying and inducement during the primaries, which took place last Saturday in the Ayawaso East constituency.

The party said in a statement dated Saturday, February 7, 2026, and signed by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, that the committee had until Tuesday, February 10, 2026, to release its conclusions. In the interim, the majority caucus of the National Democratic Congress in parliament has officially requested that the primaries be declared null and void and that any candidates who are determined to be at fault be disqualified.

The caucus statement, signed by Mr Ayariga in his capacity as Majority Leader, said the leadership had agreed that “the primary of the NDC organized in the Ayawaso East Constituency be annulled immediately” and that any candidate found to have engaged in vote-buying “be banned from participating in the subsequent primary after annulment of the election”, emphasizing the caucus’ commitment to “restoring integrity to our politics”.
