Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has called on public officials and citizens to emulate the composure, discipline and commitment to service shown by the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Naser Toure Mahama, saying such values are essential to improving the lives of constituents.
She made the remarks while delivering a tribute at funeral rites held in his honour at the National Mosque in Accra on Sunday, 11 January.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang said the late MP’s life and public service offered enduring lessons in leadership, humility and compassion, which should guide both elected officials and the wider public.
She noted that Mr Mahama was widely respected for his calm demeanour, clear thinking, and ability to offer thoughtful counsel, as well as his generosity and willingness to put the interests of others ahead of his own.
According to the vice president, his focus on duty and his disciplined approach to leadership ensured that his work consistently aimed at improving the welfare of those he served. She urged Ghanaians to draw inspiration from these qualities and incorporate them into their own lives.
Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Kwetey, also paid tribute to the late lawmaker, praising his dedication to the party and to the people of Ayawaso East.
He described Mr Mahama as a committed public servant whose contributions to the constituency and the party were marked by loyalty and a strong sense of responsibility.
Naser Toure Mahama died on 4 January 2026, only days after beginning his fourth term in Parliament. He is remembered for a legacy of quiet service, humility and a strong focus on constituency development.
