Former Assin Central MP and New Patriotic Party flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong has accused some of his fellow contenders of signing the party’s peace pact without properly reading the document.

Mr Agyapong made the comments following criticism of his objections during the signing ceremony ahead of the NPP’s January 31 presidential primary.

The peace pact, signed by all five aspirants, commits candidates to party unity, acceptance of the electoral process and its outcomes, and restraint by supporters to ensure internal peace.

Speaking to party delegates in the Assin North constituency, Mr Agyapong claimed that Abetifi MP and co-aspirant Dr Bryan Acheampong mistakenly signed against his name due to what he described as a failure to scrutinise the document.

“They didn’t read the document. In my case, Hon Dr Bryan Acheampong signed at my place because he didn’t read,” Mr Agyapong said, criticising what he described as the carelessness of aspirants with doctoral degrees.

He said his objection was based on a clause requiring aspirants to accept the outcome of the primary regardless of whether they believed the process was fair.

Mr Agyapong cited alleged irregularities from the party’s 2023 primary to justify his concerns, pointing to discrepancies in vote tallies from several constituencies.

Earlier, his spokesperson, Kwasi Kwarteng, said the protest stemmed from the omission of a clause previously agreed by all aspirants — that voting centres would also serve as collation centres, with results declared on-site.

According to Mr Kwarteng, the chairman of the party’s Presidential Election Committee later acknowledged the omission and gave assurances that the clause would be reinstated.

Mr Agyapong subsequently signed the peace pact.
