Gov’t Assures Minimal Power Disruption During WAPCo Gas Pipeline Maintenance.

The government has assured the public that electricity supply will experience minimal disruption as the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) undertakes a scheduled maintenance exercise on its gas infrastructure on Sunday, January 18, 2026.

In a joint update, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) confirmed that the mandatory maintenance will take place between 6:00am and 3:00pm, leading to a temporary interruption in gas supply to thermal power plants located in Tema.

According to GRIDCo, the maintenance is a critical safety exercise required to ensure the long-term reliability and integrity of the gas supply system. The company explained that the works form part of routine operational requirements necessary for sustaining safe gas transportation along the pipeline network.

To avert any major impact on power generation, GRIDCo said adequate alternative fuel arrangements have already been put in place to maintain stable electricity supply throughout the maintenance period.

“Adequate alternative fuel arrangements have been put in place to guarantee the continuity of power generation and to maintain a stable electricity supply throughout the duration of the works,” the statement said.

GRIDCo added that stakeholders across the energy value chain will remain actively engaged during the exercise, with continuous monitoring to ensure the maintenance is completed safely and within the scheduled timeframe.

The company apologised to the public for any inconvenience the exercise may cause and appealed for cooperation and understanding, stressing that the maintenance is being undertaken in the interest of national energy security.
