Senior officials from Ghana and Japan have held talks aimed at strengthening the long-standing diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries.
The discussions took place on 14 January between Ghana’s Chief Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Khadija Iddrisu, and Taro Kawase, Director of the First Africa Division at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to officials, the meeting focused on expanding cooperation in key areas including trade and investment, education, capacity building and people-to-people exchanges.
Ambassador Iddrisu expressed Ghana’s appreciation for Japan’s continued partnership, describing relations between the two countries as cordial and mutually beneficial. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to deepening collaboration through sustained high-level engagement and closer economic cooperation.
She also highlighted the importance of leveraging upcoming milestone anniversaries in Ghana–Japan relations to raise public awareness and enhance the visibility of existing cooperation.
Mr Kawase outlined ongoing bilateral engagements, including a joint Ghana–Japan public-private business mission currently underway in Ghana. The delegation includes senior Japanese government officials and representatives from 35 Japanese companies exploring trade and investment opportunities.
He said the mission reflected growing interest among Japanese businesses in Ghana’s economy and a desire to better understand the country’s investment environment. Mr Kawase expressed optimism that the engagements would lead to expanded business opportunities, stressing the need for continued dialogue and follow-up.
Both sides welcomed proposals to deepen cooperation in education and capacity building, citing partnerships between Ghanaian and Japanese universities as important to long-term human capital development.
The talks also reviewed upcoming landmark anniversaries in the bilateral relationship, including 100 years of engagement in the cocoa and chocolate value chain, marked by the centenary of Meiji Corporation’s first importation of cocoa from Ghana to Japan.
Another milestone highlighted was the centenary of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi’s historic visit and work in Ghana. Officials agreed that the anniversaries present an opportunity to celebrate shared history and further strengthen public understanding of the Ghana–Japan partnership.
Also present at the meeting were Ghana’s Acting Coordinating Director for Political and Economic Affairs, Ambassador Harold Adlai Agyemang; Japan’s Ambassador to Ghana, Hiroshi Yoshimoto; and officials from both countries’ foreign ministries.
