A former Ghanaian diplomat, Dr Tony Aidoo, has questioned the suitability of Kennedy Ohene Agyapong as a presidential candidate, urging the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker to withdraw from the party’s leadership race.
Dr Aidoo, who previously served as Ghana’s ambassador to the Netherlands, made the remarks during an interview on Joy FM on Friday, ahead of the NPP’s presidential primaries scheduled for Saturday.
Asked to assess the five contenders vying to lead the governing party into the next general election, Dr Aidoo suggested that Mr. Agyapong does not possess the temperament expected of a head of state. He argued that the Assin Central MP’s public conduct and rhetoric fall short of the standards required for the presidency.
In his view, Ghana needs a leader who demonstrates restraint and integrity, qualities he said Mr Agyapong has not consistently shown in public life. He described the lawmaker as unsuited for the office, insisting that he does not fit what he considers presidential material.
The comments come as the NPP prepares to hold what is expected to be one of its most competitive internal contests in recent years.
Five candidates are contesting the primary: former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; Abetifi MP and former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr Bryan Acheampong; Bosomtwe MP and former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong.
The party is seeking to elect a flagbearer ahead of Ghana’s next general election.
