Blackout hits major areas in Kumasi and Ashanti Region.

Many parts of Greater Kumasi and the wider Ashanti Region were plunged into darkness on Tuesday, barely a day after AKSA Energy announced the successful integration of its Anwomaso Power Plant into Ghana’s national transmission grid.

The cause of the unannounced power outage remains unclear, with several communities and businesses affected. The blackout has compounded challenges across major streets and intersections, where non-functioning traffic lights have led to traffic congestion and safety concerns.

Residents have also been forced to contend with intense heat as the outage persists, disrupting household activities and commercial operations.

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has previously indicated that, once fully operational, the AKSA Anwomaso Power Plant is expected to contribute approximately 141 megawatts to the national grid. The additional capacity is intended to significantly improve electricity supply, particularly across the middle belt and surrounding regions.

Officials say the new generation capacity should help ease pressure on the power system during peak demand periods and enhance overall reliability.

However, despite these assurances, large swathes of Kumasi and nearby areas remain without electricity, raising concerns among residents and businesses over the timing and cause of the disruption.
