SAMREBOI: A BRIEF HISTORY
Samreboi is a town in the Amenfi West District of the Western Region. It is mostly a farming community famed for its cocoa and lumber production.
The town has a history of timber processing and is home to the second largest timber processing firm, Samertex Timber and Plywood Company, formerly known as African Timber and Plywood Company (AT&P).
The word ‘Samreboi’ is made up of two Akan words: ‘Samre’, the name of a river, and ‘Aboye’, a meeting place. The history of Samreboi begins in 1947 with the creation of the AT&P, a subsidiary of the UAC group of businesses. Before the company was founded, the management spoke with Nana Asare Kwame III, the Chief of Asankragua at the time, about a suitable site for their operations.
After a few conversations, they eventually agreed on a location near the junction of the Samre and Tano rivers. This location, which the Asankragua people called ‘Samre aboye’ (confluence of the Samre River), has been corrupted to Samreboi. Document and printing services
Today, Samreboi has grown into a community of about 28,909 people with around 20 surrounding villages. Samreboi brings two things to mind: the Samartex Timber & Plywood Company Limited and FC Samartex (FC SAX), a recreational football club founded in 1996.
Since 1995, the Samartex Timber & Plywood Company Limited has invested significantly in rehabilitation, transforming it into a major timber company in Ghana.
Like its parent firm, FC Samartex, the Timber Giants, as they are known, ascended through the ranks of the lower divisions to enter Ghana’s Premier League in the 2022/23 season. After only two seasons, the giants went from a mid-table squad in their first try to triumphing in the 23/24 Premier League season.
