The Ghana Navy has carried out two major operations in the Volta Region, resulting in the seizure of large quantities of fuel and equipment linked to illegal bunkering activities.
In a press statement on Friday, the Ghana Armed Forces said naval personnel from Naval Base Nute Kpor conducted intelligence-led operations to curb fuel smuggling along the country’s coastline.
The first operation, on 13 January, targeted landing beaches at Abeliakorpe and Atokukorpe in Aflao. According to the Navy, the raid, which lasted from 05:00 to 13:40, focused on stash houses and makeshift structures used by fuel smugglers.
The Navy said the operation led to the seizure of 162 25-litre gallons and 32 200-litre barrels of fuel.
A follow-up operation on 15 January intercepted several modified canoes, locally known as “Dendes”, suspected to be used for smuggling fuel at sea along the Keta–Denu–Aflao coastline. While the suspects reportedly fled after spotting a naval vessel, the Navy seized the canoes, which contained 378 empty barrels engineered for fuel transport, and towed them to Tema Harbour for further action.
The Ghana Navy reiterated its commitment to securing the country’s maritime domain and urged coastal residents to report suspicious activities.
“The Ghana Navy remains dedicated to its mission of securing the nation’s maritime domain,” the statement said, adding that community support is crucial for protecting national security, marine biodiversity, and the sustainability of Ghana’s blue economy.
