The government has announced that 10 large-capacity Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses will soon return to Accra’s roads as part of emergency measures to ease the worsening public transport situation in the capital.
The announcement was made by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, during an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, January 16, 2026.
According to him, the buses, which had been grounded due to mechanical breakdowns, are currently undergoing rapid repairs following directives from the Ministry of Transport.
“He has ordered that they should be fixed quickly, so we expect that in a matter of a day or two, they should be back on the road—about 10 large-capacity buses belonging to MMT. We believe this will ease the situation a lot,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu said.
Transport Woes Deepen in Accra
Public transportation in Accra has deteriorated significantly in recent weeks, with commuters enduring long queues, extended waiting times, and inflated fares, especially during peak morning and evening hours.
Areas such as Madina, Amasaman, and Kasoa have been particularly affected, with the situation worsening during the December 2025 festive season, when travel demand surged.
The challenges have sparked public outrage, as commuters struggle to secure affordable and timely transport amid growing congestion and limited bus availability.
Previous Interventions Provided Partial Relief
Mr Kwakye Ofosu acknowledged that earlier government interventions—including the temporary deployment of about 40 buses from the State Transport Company (STC)—had provided some relief.
However, he noted that compliance issues among some drivers, who reverted to old practices of fare exploitation, undermined the effectiveness of those measures.
The restoration of the MMT buses, he said, is expected to improve travel efficiency, reduce congestion, and stabilise fares, particularly on high-demand routes.
High-Level Engagements Ongoing
Meanwhile,Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is scheduled to visit the Ministry of Transport later on Friday to engage officials on the persistent challenges confronting the public transport sector.
Discussions are expected to focus on short-term interventions for the Greater Accra Region, as well as medium- to long-term strategies to strengthen public transportation nationwide.
The government has reiterated its commitment to restoring order and reliability to urban transport systems, as pressure mounts from commuters for lasting solutions.
