Kwesi Nyantakyi is not an NPP stalwart, his endorsement of Kennedy Agyapong counts very little-Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

Internal Friction: Oppong Nkrumah Dismisses Nyantakyi’s Support for Ken Agyapong

The post-election fallout within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is heating up, as Ofoase-Ayirebi MP Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the vice chairman for the Bawumia campaign team, recently took to the airwaves to fire back at critics of the party’s current leadership.

Speaking on Asempa FM, the former Information Minister didn’t mince words when asked about the growing wave of endorsements for Kennedy Agyapong. Specifically, Oppong Nkrumah took aim at former GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi, who has been vocal in his support for the Assin Central firebrand.

The Breakdown of the Dispute:

  • The “Baggage” Argument: Nyantakyi recently stirred the pot by claiming Kennedy Agyapong is the most “credible and least risky” choice for the party’s future. His logic? Other top contenders (referring to Dr. Bawumia’s camp) are too closely tied to the party’s 2024 electoral performance.

  • The Rebuttal: Oppong Nkrumah moved quickly to neutralize Nyantakyi’s influence. He argued that Nyantakyi lacks “significant standing” within the NPP’s official leadership structure, effectively labelling him a political outsider whose opinions carry little weight in the party’s internal dynamics.

  • The Strategy: By downplaying the relevance of these endorsements, Oppong Nkrumah is attempting to shield the Bawumia camp from the narrative that the current leadership is a spent force.

The Bottom Line

This exchange signals that the battle for the “soul of the party” is far from over. As the NPP navigates its path forward after the 2024 polls, the divide between the “establishment” and the “grassroots insurgents” led by Agyapong is becoming increasingly personal.

The NPP is 25 days away from its crunch presidential primaries scheduled for 31st January 2026, with a runoff, if necessary, scheduled for a fortnight later on 14th February 2026.
